Abstract : Abstract Ginger (Zingiber officinal Roscoe of the family Zingiberaceae) is a medicinal plant mentioned in the Holy Quran and Hadith of Holy Prophet (Peace be upon him) and used worldwide in traditional and folk medicine. It contains numerous chemical components and the major active ingredients are gingerol and gingerol related compounds which are responsible for various pharmacological and biological activities, such as antioxidant, anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory and other biological activities. The present study was undertaken to investigate the effect of an aqueous ginger extract on the immune system in smokers compared to non-smokers. This study was conducted on 68 young Saudi males (33 smokers and 35 non-smokers) with an age range of 25-38 years. All participants were free of medications and chronic diseases or allergic diseases. Subjects were instructed to drink an aqueous ginger extract daily for 21 days. Anthropometric measurements were taken and blood samples were collected at the beginning (initial samples) and the end of the experimental period (final samples) to measure the differential complete blood count; lipid profile; T3, T4, and TSH thyroid hormones; IgG and IgM antibodies; C-reactive protein and blood pressure. The results for the initial samples showed a significant increase for the smokers compared to non-smokers for BMI, RBCs, cholesterol, HDL, triglyceride and for blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) except for neutrophils which showed a significant increase for non-smokers compared to smokers. The results for the final samples showed a significant increase for the smokers compared to non-smokers for RBC, hemoglobin, lymphocytes, HDL, IgG and systolic and diastolic blood pressure except for neutrophils, TSH and IgM, which showed significant increases for non-smokers compared to smokers. In conclusion, the data suggest that ginger has some immune and biological activities. More work needs to be done regarding ginger’s medicinal importance for the benefit of human health. :(Key Words) خمس كلمات مفتاحية smokers, ginger extract, immune system, tobacco, biological activities
