Abstract : Background: Contraception has been one of the most highly debated issues worldwide in recent years. Spacing and limiting the number of pregnancies have a positive impact on women’s health and well-being as well as on the outcome of each pregnancy. On the other hand, unintended pregnancies that result from the non-use of contraception can jeopardize women’s health while putting a burden on society. Aim: This study aimed to assess the effect of an educational modern contraception booklet on primiparae knowledge and intention to use at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Methods: A pre-experimental (pre-test-post-test) design was used to conduct the study at King Abdulaziz University Hospital in Jeddah city, Saudi Arabia. A purposive sampling technique was used and sixty primipara women constituted the study sample. A self-administered questionnaire was used to assess women's knowledge and intent to use contraception before and after the educational session. Results: Results demonstrated that the the mean percentage of knowledge about contraception after educational session (85.42%) is higher than before educational session (17.34%). For intent to use contraception, the mean percentage of participants’ intent to use contraceptives after educational session (72.35%) is higher than before educational session (67.62%). Oral contraceptive pills (25%) were the most common used method after one month of the educational session followed by intrauterine device (21.7%) and contraceptive implant (21.7%). However, 70.0% of the participants did not previously use any contraceptive method. Conclusion and Recommendations: The educational session using educational booklet has a significant effect on participants’ knowledge and intent to use contraceptives. It is therefore important that health authorities take up the challenge of expanding family planning services. Moreover, the introduction of an educational booklet on modern contraceptives for women in health-care facilities would enhance women’s awareness and help to sustain information in long term. For future studies, mixed research design of quantitative and qualitative methods may be valuable for investigating barriers to contraceptive use and barriers of implementation of contraceptive education programs at healthcare facilities in Saudi Arabia.
