Abstract : Background: Creating the right working environment for nursing and minimizing missed nursing care incidences are effective approaches to improve health quality outcomes. There are different forms of missed care effects have been identified in the literature such as increased rates of infections, medical errors, high readmission rates, delayed discharge, and a lengthy stay in hospital. Aim: To assess the relationship between nursing practice environment and missed nursing care in King Fahad General Hospital at Madinah City. Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive, correlational cross-sectional design was utilized. A convenience sample of 211 registered nurses who provide direct care to patients in King Fahad General Hospital at Madinah city was used to collect data. The data were collected by using a self-reported survey consisting of three parts, part one for sociodemographic and professional characteristics, part two for the nursing practice environment, and part three for missed nursing care. Results: The study revealed that the nurses had rarely missed care, and the nursing working environment was favorable for them. Among the nursing working environment subscales, "collegial nurse-physician relations" had the highest mean score (mean: 3.69 ± 0.66 SD) while "staffing and resource adequacy" had the lowest mean score (mean: 2.92 ± 1.05 SD).Conclusion and Recommendations: The current study's findings revealed that the missed nursing care was inversely significantly correlated with overall nursing working environment and their subscales including: "nursing foundations for quality of care", "nurse manager ability, leadership, and support of nurses" and "staffing and resources adequacy". There is a need to create strategies to maintain adequate staffing and resources to reduce missed nursing care. Additionally, a missed care analysis program is needed to capture the missed nursing care every day, detect the reasons for it, and prevent it. Also, there is a need to conduct training courses about the importance of improving the nursing working environment to reduce missed nursing care as well as to raise the awareness of nursing and hospital managers.
