Abstract : This study deals with an important aspect of novel criticism in Saudi Arabia; paratext. It followes how Saudi narritive’s critics have dealt withe the thresholds of novel, from 2007 to 2018. Paratext is, this study thinks, a new field which needs a systematic and close reading that reveals its current situation and speculates its future. Thus, this thesis starts with some theoritical questions about the definition of the concept, scale of practic and development of the paratetx thoery in both cultrues: Western and Arabic. It also tries to trace the reciption of the concept and the difficulties Arab critics, and Saudis in particuar, have faced dealing with the concept and the theory. The second part of this study is practical; it attempts to analyse samples from Saudi critic’s works which adrress paratext of Saudi novel. The analysis focuses on these works, in order to find out how Saudi critcs have understood the theory’s foundations and applications, and what thier methods have been. The main findings of this present study show the reality of the pretext in Saudi Arabian novelistic criticism; the shortage of knowledge of relevant studies and pretext functions, due to which, many studies deviated from the deep investigation and analysis that Gérard Genette called for. As a result, some of these studies are seen as involved in identifying the paratext without a clear critical approach, which means unfruitful critical approaches have become common. Both of which don’t take into consideration the nature of pretext and its special and complex relations, which causes the existence of misunderstanding, confusion and ambiguity. Nevertheless, the positive diversion in the cognitive and social conditions with the involvement of paratexts in Saudi academic literary criticism have contributed to the emergence of significant critical studies.
