Abstract : Nowadays, vitaminD deficiency is a worldwide health problem that affects many population including Type1 diabetic adolescents (T1DM). The role of vitamin D in autoimmune diseases such as T1DM is an ongoing area of interest. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different factors on incidence of T1DM in Saudi adolescents and its relationship with vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms. In this study, 49 T1DM and 49 Non-T1DM adolescents, age and gender-matched, were enrolled. Sampling was carried out at KAUH. Fasting blood glucose (FBG), glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and vitamin D were determined and statistics were made using SPSS-22.The mean values of vitamin D were significantly lower in T1DM compared to Non-T1DM groups. The vitamin D deficient and insufficient were81%inT1DM vs 61% in Non-T1DM adolescents. Based on sex, female showed higher significant low vitamin D between T1DM and Non-T1DM in overall groups and in all vitamin level subgroups.Data detected a negative correlation between the vitamin D values and each of HbA1c and FBG values only in T1DM adolescents.The vitamin D daily dietary intake and the Percentage of vitamin RDA is significant low in T1DM than Non-T1DM adolescents.The milk and fortified food groups consumption had significant effect on vitamiD status.The VDR gene polymorphism showed a significant (p=0.005)difference only in genotype frequency of BsmI region.There was a strong association between VDR at BsmI site and incidence of TIDM Saudi adolescences in addition to dietary intake with low association with most of sunexposure variables.Conclusion:Prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in T1DM Saudi adolescents is relatively high in female.The VDR may consider as risk factor for diabetes incidence in addition to dietary intake. Therefore, it should be included in vitamin D screening for early young age.
