Abstract : Synthesis, Characterizations and Biological activities of Some Copper(I) Diimine Complexes Kholood Hussain Mashat ABSTRACT Copper(I) complexes with diimine-phosphene set of ligands were synthesized by refluxing methanolic solutions of CuBr2 with at least four fold molar excess of the phosphine ligands followed by treating the intermediate with one molar equivalent of the diimine ligand to offer complexes with the general formula [CuBr(PR3)(N^N)] (5 to 17) . The only exception was the complexes [Cu(P{C6H4-4-OMe}3)2(phen)]Br (8). The new complexes were characterized by elemental analysis, 31P NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Additional confirmation of 1, 2, 6, 7, 8, 11 and 13 structures were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The DNA-binding study of the complexes 5 – 17 against CT-DNA showed binding constant values that correspond to the intercalation mode of binding. The notable variations in the binding constants of the complexes suggest different contribution from the diimine and phosphine ligands. The complexes were tested against four cancer cell lines and found to have promising anticancer activity against prostate cancer cell lines. The DNA binding and anticancer studies were supported and rationalized by molecular docking calculations, highlighting some structure-DNA binding correlations.
