Abstract : The construction industry is one of the most risky and challenging businesses. Contractors of construction projects have a poor record of dealing with the construction risks, they have been suffering from the risks consequences on the projects such as delays, cost overrun, and quality below the standards. This study aims to evaluate the present practices of risk management utilized by the contractors in Saudi Arabia and investigate the effectiveness of risk techniques and tools. The literature review of the subject was conducted and important risk factors were defined. 32 risk factors were categorized into 7 groups in construction projects. The objectives of the study have been achieved through a comparative study of closed-ended questionnaires with interviews. Responses from 35 contractors were obtained, analyzed and reported. Brainstorming, questionnaires/surveys and historical risk data identification techniques were practiced to identify the risks. The findings concluded that financial and economic category has the highest level of severity. The most utilized risk analysis techniques were examined to discover how much they are effective in construction projects. These techniques are: Direct judgment, probability/impact risk rating matrix and sensitivity analysis. The study revealed that due to lack of knowledge and doubts about the suitability of risk management techniques, Contractors do not utilize risk analysis techniques but depend widely on the direct judgment in estimating time and cost of the projects. It was observed also that both the duration of professional experience and education level of respondents have not any significant impact on general organization risk management strategies.
